The Scythe in the Faroe Islands

Posted on April 8, 2015 (Updated March 8, 2017) by Michelle Laine

One of the most amazing place we visited whilst in the Faroe islands was the little community of Saksun. After a beautiful cycle along a fjord then up a glacial valley, we climbed a small rise to find the settlement perched above a tidal lagoon, with mountains and cascading waterfalls

Outdoor Haystack Part 2 – taking it down

Posted on April 6, 2015 (Updated March 8, 2017) by Michelle Laine

Last summer, after filling the barn with hay we built an outdoor hay stack. (See here). Here it is when freshly built. We meant to put a tarp or something over it to protect the top and help it shed water, but we somehow never got around to it. Over

The Scent of Summer

Posted on January 22, 2015 (Updated March 8, 2017) by Michelle Laine

Twice a day I go to the barn to fetch hay for the livestock. Just recently I have reached a particularly fragrant layer in one of the stacks. As I pull out the hay I am surrounded by the rich, sweet smell of summer. Happy hay munchers Looking at the

Posted on August 16, 2014 (Updated March 8, 2017) by Michelle Laine

The bulk of the cutting on Cae Mari Jones has been done now. The major task at the moment is dismantling the racks and bringing in the hay when ever there is an opportunity. One dry day is usually enough to ensure any wet from the rain dries off the

Haymaking 2014 – Making Bales

Posted on August 12, 2014 (Updated March 8, 2017) by Michelle Laine

It has all been very busy the last couple of weeks, hence no posts for a while. Hay making continues on Mari Jones, all using racks now because of the unsettled weather. We carried the hand bale press into the field two weeks ago. It is good to bale up

Hay Making 2014 – Outdoor Hay Stacks

Posted on July 24, 2014 (Updated March 8, 2017) by Michelle Laine

Life seems busier then ever and I haven’t found time lately to post updates on the hay making! Here is something I wrote last week and have just got around to finishing. Thursday 24th July. We bought in more of the hay mown during the week, plus two more racks.
