Using Racks Part 2

Racks in Cae Mari Jones, some with canvas “hats” tied on

Yesterday we finished putting the drier grass cut on the mowing day up onto racks, making 12 in the field in all.

Today, I added some canvas “hats” to 5 of the racks, made from some bits of old yurt canvas stashed in the workshop, inspired by pictures we have seen of racks built in other areas of Europe.

In previous years we have found that, while the “thatch” of hay that form over the surface of the rack is sufficient to shed drizzle and light rain, extremely heavy falls of rain tend to penetrate further into the hay and cause damage. Heavy rain is forecast for us tonight, so we have decided to experiment with “hats”. We have covered some racks and left others so we can assess the difference.
