Description
A French stone from the Pyrenees.
We start the majority of people with this stone as it easy to get a sharp edge without having to apply a lot of pressure, whilst the stone is still fine enough that it does not remove a lot of metal on each honing.
This stone has laminations made up of a soft substrate with harder silica grits. The soft material wears away to continually expose fresh grits, keeping it sharpening well over time.
If used with more pressure it has a more aggressive action and removes more metal. When used with less pressure, the slurry it forms in use gives a fine polishing action on the edge.
As your sharpening / peening skills improve you may wish to progress to a finer Rozsutec stone.
For a more aggressive stone see La Bergamasca.
Grit – approx. 1000
