The Mighty Outdoor Hay Stack

We have been lucky in our corner of West Wales to have had just enough rain to keep the grass growing combined with enough sun to make the hay making flow.

We pretty much filled the barns with the crop from our early top meadow so most of the crop from Cae Mari Jones has gone onto an outdoor haystack.

We have built outdoor stacks before, mostly of coarse late-cut hay to use for bedding. Last year’s stack was so successful, and so enjoyed by the cows, that we have raised our game this year and used higher quality hay with the aim of feeding most of it.

Here are a series of photos of it being built.

OK it’s not huge by historical standards, but it’s the biggest one we’ve built to date!
